Supporting Our Veterans

A local veteran had been injured on the job, was denied workman’s compensation, and paid all of his bills from his savings.  After nearly a year when his money ran out and he couldn’t pay his rent, he heard about Side by Side from Health and Human Services. We paid his rent for a month while he worked with a lawyer to obtain workman’s comp to no avail.  He was so grateful for Side by Side for helping him avoid eviction. Thanks to our partnerships and community resources, we helped him navigate both Veterans’ Affairs and Social Security Disability office to obtain a few thousand dollars to help him receive not only SSDI but a Veteran’s pension for doing two tours of duty that he didn’t even know he was entitled to!  Two years later, he finally received the workman’s comp settlement.  Without the guidance and inspiration of Side by Side he might never have received either benefit.

“I came to you for help and had a wonderful encouraging conversation… I was treated with compassion and respect.  Then you blessed us by paying on our gas and electric bills.  You have helped much more than you know just by caring.”
